When I started working in oils several years ago, I did plein air paintings almost exclusively. I love the spontaneity and immediacy of working on a small canvas in a short period of time. It was a great way to learn color and value. Now I’m starting to work on larger canvases in my studio. I enjoy spending more time on composition and technique. A perfect day for me will always be sunshine, a view and a paintbrush in my hand.
Currently I have paintings at Lakeshore Gallery in Kirkland. A sampling of my 2009 shows include two exhibitions with the Eastside Association of Fine Arts, the Whidbey Camano Land Trust, the San Juan Preservation Trust, Everett’s Fresh Paint, an Oil Painters of America exhibition at Harbor Gallery in Gig Harbor and an exhibition at Gallery by the Bay. This past year I was accepted into Oil Painters of America and I am looking forward to wider opportunities this coming year.
The best way to stay current on my shows, events and trips is to check in with my blog paulaensign.blogspot.com. I update that weekly. With so many opportunities out there and sometimes last minute jurying, it’s no longer possible to include current events on the website. I’m looking forward to an active year of paint-outs and juried exhibitions as well as travels to the San Juan Islands, Eastern Washington, the Olympic Peninsula, the Canadian Rockies and more.
